Howard Jerome Hoess

December 17, 1934 - January 28, 2010

Howard Jerome Hoess, 75, of Falmouth, Kentucky, passed away on Thursday, January 28, 2010, at the St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Edgewood, Kentucky. Born in Campbell County, Kentucky on December 17, 1934, he was the son of the late Howard Albert and Adeline Marion Hoess. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Jean Hamilton Hoess on October 11, 1994 and his nephew, John Howard Keeler on November 8, 2006. Howard was the current owner and operator of Howard’s Place, a Western-themed restaurant with historic photographs and memorabilia from Pendleton, Campbell, and Harrison counties, which opened in 2005, following a fire which destroyed the Falmouth Dairy Queen, a Falmouth landmark since 1952, which had been owned by Howard since 1989 and restored after the flood of March 1, 1997. In an article published in the former “Kentucky Post” announcing the opening of Howard’s Place, he said, “I love food. I love people. I always try to leave a good memory in someone’s mind, a good impression. Everyone who comes in here is my friend.” Howard was known to many as a true, community-minded humanitarian. On July, 16, 2003, in a public celebration, a highway marker was unveiled naming a portion of U.S. 27, “Howard J. Hoess Highway.” On that day, Senator Katie Stine presented Howard with a joint resolution passed in both the House and Senate and signed by Governor Paul Patton on March 18, 2003, which honored Howard’s outstanding service to the community…”Whereas Howard Hoess, a native of Bellevue, Kentucky, has become a fixture in the civic and community life of Pendleton County: and Whereas, he has operated a Dairy Queen restaurant in Falmouth for over 20 years; and Whereas, in that time, he has been a tireless supported of youth and school activities, giving time and donations to the 4-H club, local schools and high school athletic teams, and youth sports teams; and Whereas, he also donated time and effort to support the American Legion, and the local Chamber of Commerce; and Whereas he is the loving husband of the former Patty Ammerman, and proud father of two sons, Tony and Jeff, a stepson, Dean, and a stepdaughter, Angie; and Whereas, Howard Hoess should be recognized and honored for a life well lived in support of his community.”

He was a U.S. Army veteran. Formerly, he opened and operated the “Creamy Whip” in Bellevue, Kentucky and he worked as a kitchen installer with Sears & Robuck Co., Cincinnati, Ohio. Howard and Jean Hamilton Hoess formerly operated the Loafing Shed, hosting country music barn dances, next to their home on Kentucky Highway 159 in the 1970’s. He worked as a kitchen manager at the former Robertson’s Restaurant in Ft. Mitchell, Kentucky, and he was a manager at Truck Stop 338 in Richwood, Kentucky.

Howard was also a Kentucky Colonel, a member of the Falmouth Lions Club, an Honorary State Trooper, and a lifetime member of the Pendleton County Historical Society.

He is survived by his wife of 14 years, Patty Sharp Ammerman Hoess, his sons: Tony Hoess of Falmouth, Kentucky and Jeffrey (Ray) Hoess-Brooks of Chicopee, Massachusetts; his stepson, Dean Ammerman and his stepdaughter, Angie Mullins, both of Falmouth, Kentucky; 8 grandchildren: Caitlin (Rich) Balzano of Jay, New York, Ryan Hoess and Olivia Hoess, both of Chicopee, Massachusetts, Christy (Dodd) Hance of Erlanger, Kentucky, Lindsay (Billy) Wehage of Independence, Kentucky, April (Jamie) Meadows, Barry (Monica) Ammerman, and Cassandra Ammerman, all of Falmouth, Kentucky; 4 great granddaughters: Marley Ann Wehage, Alyssia Meadows, Emma Ammerman, and Elizabeth Ammerman; two great grandsons, Blake Meadows and Chase Meadows, and one sister, Juanita “Nita” Keeler of Falmouth, Kentucky.
