Biography

Courtney Pyron Stephenson, 42, of Falmouth, KY, passed away on Friday, March 2, 2012, in a tornado in Crittenden, KY. Born in Wyoming, Ohio, on May 31, 1969, she was a daughter of Sandra Harris Pyron and the late Weldon Pyron. On October 5, 1996, she married John William Stephenson, and they were blessed with two daughters: Olivia Harris Stephenson (9) and Lily Verkamp Stephenson (7). Courtney served the community as President of the Butler United Methodist Women’s Group, Girl Scout Leader to Troop #1164, Pendleton County Library Board Member and as a parent volunteer in the Pendleton County Schools. Courtney was known as a kind and generous friend; she had a deep love of family, strong faith, and wonderful sense of humor.
Courtney graduated from Stephens College in Missouri with a degree in education. She loved children, leading her to a career though the years as a substitute teacher, latchkey coordinator, and in various capacities with the Family Nurturing Center.
Courtney had battled breast cancer for three-and-a-half years and was undergoing promising new treatment at Indiana University in Indianapolis. She was returning from an appointment there when the accident occurred. During her battle with breast cancer, her courage was an inspiration to many including her wonderful doctors and nurses, and the fellow patients she encouraged. She was also instrumental in securing new chairs and artwork for patients in the chemotherapy room at the Grant County Cancer Center.
She loved horses and dogs, and doing things with and for others. While we are saddened by our loss, we are grateful her health struggles are over. In her memory, please be checked for cancer regularly and encourage others to do the same. Her greatest legacy is her children, and in the lives of those who knew and loved her.
In addition to her husband of 15 years, John, her daughters, Olivia and Lily, and her mother, Sandra Pyron of Tennessee, she is survived by her brother, Lindsey (Colleen) Pyron of West Chester, OH; her sister, Carla Pyron of Cincinnati, OH; her mother and father-in-law, William and Judy Stephenson of Ft. Thomas, KY; 3 nieces; 3 nephews; and a host of extended family and friends.
