Mary Lou Matthews, 95, of Falmouth, passed away on Tuesday, August 25, 2015, at the River Valley Nursing Home in Butler. Born in Pendleton County, KY on October 28, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. George Purdy and the descendant of a pioneer family . She married Harold Lee Matthews, her husband of 54 years, who preceded her in death on June 24, 2006. A graduate of Transylvania University with a degree in English, Mary Lou started teaching in Campbell County, moved to Maysville High School, and retired from Deer Park High School in Montgomery, OH, after a career spanning 35 years. Together, she and her late husband enjoyed living in Maysville, KY and Montgomery, OH before retiring to Pendleton County, where they owned and operated several farms. She was a member of the Falmouth Christian Church. An avid bridge player, Mary Lou was astutely aware of current events and always willing to share a memory or insight. She looked forward to time with family and friends. She is survived by her nephew, Frank Matthews of Lexington, KY; her niece, Wanda Pavard of Danville, VA; her cousin, Jerry Keith of Crittenden, KY; her caregivers and friends, Martha and Brent Gosney, of Falmouth, KY; and a host of extended family and friends. Graveside funeral services will be held at 1 pm on Saturday, August 29, 2015, at the Riverside Cemetery, Falmouth, by Bro. Rick Halcomb under the direction of Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth. Memorials are suggested to the Falmouth Christian Church, 303 W. Shelby Street, Falmouth, KY 41040.
